China Grove, Texas

A small rural town that Realty Place specializes in. Located 12 miles east of downtown San Antonio, this small town mentioned in a Doobie Brothers song is great for residing outside of the hustle bustle of a big city.

Location:

China Grove is a small, rural town located along Highway 87. It is in eastern Bexar County and is approximately 12 miles east of downtown San Antonio. The school district is the East Central Independent School District.

History:

Like La Vernia, China Grove was originally home to over 125 Native American tribes known as the Coahuiltechans. It was officially settled in 1900, and by the mid-1930s China Grove was home to a school, church, and several houses. The town gradually grew after the expansion of the San Antonio Metropolitan area after World War II. By the 1970s, the population hit 254.

Development:

In recent years, China Grove has experiences steady growth. The Triple Elm, Triple Tree, and Tierra Bonita subdivisions were developed to encourage more population. In 2020, the population was around 1,334.

More than 90% of residents have earned their high school diploma or higher, and 22% hold college degrees or higher. The median age is 51, and the median income is $91,000. Median home prices are $200,000.

Close to San Antonio, the area offers the best of both city and rural life. China Grove is vibrant with its friendly local businesses. It shares many places of entertainment and restaurants with La Vernia and Adkins. The town is also perfect for enjoying South Texas Beauty, with many places to hike, fish, and swim.

Fun Fact:

In the 1970s, China Grove became famous as the title of the Doobie Brothers hit song “China Grove”. They refer to China Grove as “The sleepy little town down around San Antone”.
